White House: Graphic Iraq shooting video 'tragic' - Raw Story

The White House on Tuesday described leaked and graphic video of a US helicopter strike in Baghdad three years ago which killed two Reuters employees and others as "tragic."

But President Barack Obama's spokesman Robert Gibbs stressed after the previously classified video was released by whistleblower website WikiLeaks that US forces in war zones take pains to avoid civilian casualties.

The gun camera footage, posted on the Internet, includes audio conversations between Apache pilots and controllers in which they identify the men in a Baghdad street as armed insurgents and ask for permission to open fire.

"I do not know whether the president has seen the video that was released on the Internet. Obviously, it is very graphic in nature and it's extremely tragic," Gibbs told reporters.

"Our military will take every precaution necessary to ensure the safety and security of civilians, and particularly those that report in those dangerous places on behalf of news organizations."

Gibbs referred all questions about investigations into the July 2007 incident to the Pentagon.

WikiLeaks said that it had obtained the video "from a number of military whistleblowers" and decrypted it. It posted the video at collateralmurder.org.

The footage shows an aerial view of a number of men on a Baghdad street including two later identified as Reuters employees Namir Noor-Eldeen and Saeed Chmagh.

At least two individuals in the video appear to be carrying weapons but most are unarmed. The Apache pilots also appear to mistake a camera carried by one of the Reuters employees as a rocket-propelled grenade launcher or RPG.

At one point, the Apache pilots tell controllers they have spotted "five to six individuals with AK-47s" and ask for permission to "engage."

The Apache pilots open fire with the helicopter's cannon after which one says there are a "bunch of bodies lying there."

"Look at those dead bastards," one says. Another replies: "Nice."

Shortly after the initial shooting, a van pulls up to pick up the dead and wounded and is fired upon by the Apaches. Two children in the van were injured and evacuated by US ground troops who arrived later on the scene.

A US military official did not dispute the authenticity of the video but said it "doesn't give new information, it just gives footage."

"We had insurgents and reporters in an area where US forces were about to be ambushed," the official added. "At the time we weren't able to discern whether (the Reuters employees) were carrying cameras or weapons."

1 GB RAM and my Graphic Card fail together?!? - Toms Hardware

Hello everyone
I am having this problem which I dont understand. I was using a AGP Nvidia 7600 graphic card and 1.5 GB RAM [ 1 GB + 512 GB], but all of a sudden, both the graphic card and 1 GB RAM failed together. When I started my PC, the monitor would just show a black screen, so I removed these two failed components and plugged the monitor cord into the motherboard slot and the PC worked..

So, I am wondering, have the two things really failed and its just a coincidence they failed together or is that by mistake somewhere some settings have been changed which is causing this problem??

PS- My graphic card's fan is still working if that means anything.

What do you guys think is the problem??

Mat Johnson leans back in his chair as 10 of his students dissect a short piece about a group of unlikable friends.

Though the discussion intensifies, he remains calm in his long sleeve T-shirt and jeans cuffed above a pair of simple black Pumas.

"More never helps," Johnson said, springing out of his seat to break down the writing process. He touches on pacing, narrative structure, dialogue constructs and plot devices. Then come the visual elements and non-verbal literary techniques.

It's just a typical Tuesday afternoon at the University of Houston's new Graphic Novel Workshop, with students debating the dynamics of the theory of relativity, the motivations of evil men and the quirks that loved ones share.

With the recent popularity of graphic novels, the mature cousin of comic books, the university is experimenting with a graduate course where students will analyze a dozen pieces and eventually create two original works by semester's end.

"They're not just dabbling, they're serious writers," said Johnson, who authored a pair of novels before entering the graphic novel field. "This is just them trying to figure out another medium for telling stories."

Double-digit growth

What once was a genre about capes, spandex and catchphrases has evolved to tackle more adult themes and issues. The students in Johnson's class are writing stories of an emergency worker's struggle to deal with the horrors of the job, a lesbian police officer coming out to her co-workers and a small-town murder investigation where everyone is a suspect.

Johnson discovered that there are more opportunities to find an audience for graphic novels because readers are more diverse and willing to take a chance on unknown authors.

"In graphic writing, I'm reaching about five times as many as my novels," Johnson said. "I love the novel, and it's my first love, but graphic novels just fit the culture today."

The graphic novel industry has reported double-digit growth over the past decade, according to Joe Field, president of ComicsPro, a trade organization for independent comic retailers.

"Ten to 12 years ago I had to pay attention to 12 to 20 publishers," Field said. "Now, literally every publishing house has a graphic novel imprint ... Graphic novels are the only segment of publishing that has consistently gone up in the last five to six years."

Stephen King interested

As pop culture expands the medium to new audiences, big business is looking for investments to cash in with their properties.

Disney bought Marvel Comic for $4 billion last August largely for movie rights, publishing giant Hachette Book Group set records for first-week sales with the first volume of a graphic novel adaptation for Twilight last week, and even established writers including Stephen King are getting in on the act.

"When someone who has written as many novels as King is paying attention to the medium, you know that there's a lot more attention that's being paid," Field said.

"The stories are told in a more complicated way to (show) character and motivation," said Joshua Gottlieb, a graduate student working toward a master's degree in poetry. "It's not that the writing is better and the art is better, it's that they've (engaged) the reader ... with connections between the arts."

In this class, the literary masters aren't Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck or Kurt Vonnegut. They are graphic novel writers Art Spiegelman (Maus), Frank Miller (Sin City) and Alan Moore (V for Vendeta), authors who have written about the Holocaust, corruption of humanity and fascism and tyrannical governments.

With the popularity of big budget films such as Spider-Man and The Dark Knight, and small pet projects like Ghost World and Persepolis, all sourced from graphic novels, hitting a cord, the medium has surged from the quiet corners of comic shops to entire sections at big box bookstores, and Johnson believes it's important for academia to take notice and not dismiss the genre as juvenile or a distraction from "real literature".

"It's gotten so mainstream, that making the point that it's mainstream is cliche," Johnson said. "When you look at a graphic novel it's the pure backbone of what a story is."

Good Morning America's Bill Weir and Reuters editor Chrystia Freeland on Saturday gushed over Obama administration talking points on the new unemployment numbers. After Weir talked about a White House-created graphic showing job losses slowing, Freeland unselfconsciously rhapsodized, "Well, I was going to say, what I think that first tells you is that [presidential adviser David] Axelrod is a really smart guy, because that is a beautiful graphic."

Continuing to tout how useful the show was being to the Obama administration, she added, "And I'm sure he's really, really happy to see it on TV." Perhaps wanting to spread the credit around, Weir complimented, "Might be [Obama adviser] David Plouffe who came up with that one, too."

Freeland couldn't get over the cleverness of this graphic, which featured the Obama logo, enthusing, "Okay! Okay. Both of you guys, well done." Now, it's one thing to repeat Democratic talking points, but to tout the brilliance of said talking points is quite another.

Earlier in the segment, Freeland flat-out asserted that the addition of 160,000 jobs last month meant the recession is over. When asked that question by Weir, she proclaimed, "Yes. Absolutely. I mean, this is really good news."

Later in the segment, the Reuters editor did try and make some attempt at tempering her praise: "Having said that, I think, actually, both the Bush administration and the Obama administration deserves a real credit for steering the country through the financial crisis." Too often, however, she seemed to be focused on hyping the President.

NewsBusters readers will remember that Weir famously said of Obama's innaugeration: "...From above, even the seagulls must have been awed by the blanket of humanity."

A transcript of the April 3 segment, which aired at 7:05am EDT, follows:

BILL WEIR: And to get a little more perspective now, let us turn to the Reuters global editor at large, Chrystia Freeland. Good to see you this morning. Thanks for coming in.
CHRYSTIA FREELAND (Global editor-at-large, Reuters): Nice to be here.
WEIR: So, does this mean that recession is officially over?
FREELAND: Yes. Absolutely. I mean, this is really good news. We have to be cheerful about it. This, as you said in the really good report, this is the strongest jobs numbers we've had in three years and that is a really good and important sign. Having said that, it's not going to feel good for a long time. We had a huge loss of jobs. Eight- More than eight million. And it's going to take more than 162,000 jobs a month to get people out of that.
WEIR: Right. What's so interesting, wall street is doing gangbusters. Corporate America seems to be healthier. Does that mean it's- they're running leaner and meaner? And they're more resistant to hang out the help wanted sign? What has to happen for that to translate into jobs?
FREELAND: Yeah. I think that's a really good point. And I think we'll feel like a two-speed America. We've seen a really strong rebound in the corporate sector that's been reflected in the stock market. Wall Street is getting happy. But, it's not going to feel like that on main street for a while. And one the interesting things that came out of these jobs reports is, even though people are working longer hours and being more productive, wages fell a little bit. So, employers still have the upper hand right now.
WEIR: If you're one of those 15 million out there looking for a job, all of these numbers and charts are cold comfort for you. But we do live in a very politically charged era these days. And the Obama administration is quite proud of this particular graphic. It's all over their website. [Onscreen: Obama graphic. Has the Obama logo. Says: "Road to Recovery." Shows job losses from the Bush administration and the Obama administration, with job losses getting less under Obama.] On- These are job losses going back to November of '07. Now, on the red side, on the left, steady job losses under the Bush administration. They bottom out right before Obama takes office. And then the increase begins. What does that tell you about policy? And the stimulus? And all of the efforts made on both administrations?
FREELAND: Well, I was going to say, what I think that first tells you is that Axelrod is a really smart guy, because that is a beautiful graphic. And I'm sure he's really, really happy to see it on TV.
WEIR: Might be David Plouffe who came up with that one, too.
FREELAND: Okay! Okay. Both of you guys, well done. I think, in general, we tend to both blame and credit the White House too much for what we see in the economy. The economy is not like a car that you can just turn the steering wheel and turn jobs up, they would do that.
WEIR: Right.
FREELAND: Having said that, I think, actually, both the Bush administration and the Obama administration deserves a real credit for steering the country through the financial crisis. Two years ago, we were talking about the possibility there would be a second Great Depression. That hasn't happened. The other political thing that I think is really important about these jobs numbers is it's not going to be enough for people to be cheering and feeling really comfortable in November. So, cold comfort for people who don't have a job. Not a lot of comfort for the White House, for Democrats, looking at the midterms.
WEIR: Yeah, might be too little, too late for them. But, a little bipartisan kudos, which is a rare thing on any program these days.
FREELAND: Absolutely. Absolutely.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Former AL Cy Young winner Cliff Lee is the latest injured pro athlete to try a controversial treatment in hopes of speeding his recovery.

The Seattle Mariners pitcher strained his abdomen in mid-March. With opening day right around the corner, Lee tried platelet-rich plasma injection therapy to get back on the field.

The procedure involves drawing the athlete's own blood, spinning it in a centrifuge, and injecting it back into the affected area. But some doctors doubt whether it works.

The Associated Press discussed it with seven athletes who have tried the procedure. Though not a scientific sampling, not one of the athletes could definitively say the treatment helped.

Graphic images delay censor report - The Age

A SUBMISSION by Julie Gale, the director of lobby group Kids Free 2B Kids, to a government censorship working party was delayed - because of, ironically, public servants' concerns about transmitting the graphic images.

The submission includes examples of ''teen porn'' with titles such as Barely Legal, Finally Legal, Live Young Girls, Purely 18 and Petite, which use models who look under-age. Such magazines are ostensibly classified as ''Category 1-restricted'', must be partially sealed and are banned for sale to under 18s.

The submission includes copies of these magazines bought in Melbourne with headlines ranging from ''Budding Boobies & Pretty Pigtails'', ''Virgin Cutie'' to ''Freshest teen sluts on the net'' above pictures of models who look under-age.

Other magazines such as The Picture and People are classified as ''unrestricted magazines'' that can be sold unsealed to over 15s and also include highly sexualised material.

''Ninety five per cent of the porn magazines freely available for sale in Australia aren't even being seen by the Classification Board because distributors are selling them direct to retailers after sticking their own 'category 1-restricted' labels on them,'' said Ms Gale.

''The distributors are flouting the law and there is no enforcement.''

The working party reviewing the classification and display of porn magazines eventually accepted Ms Gale's submission. It is to report this month.

Ra'anana ----November 2008 .......... Ra'anana is a small city (about 80,000 citizens) in the southern Gush Dan Sharon region of Israel. Ra'anana is a suburb of Tel Aviv, about a twenty minute car ride north. Ra'anana is predominantly Jewish, with many Anglo immigrants from English-speaking countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.

Ra'anana is bordered by the towns of Kfar Sava to the East and Hezliya to the West. It is a beautiful, modern city, which was well planned and noted for its respected infrastructure.

Ra'anana, Israel has served as an example of how both the secular and religious Jewish communities in Israel can live side by side with tolerance and respect.

Raanana's story began in 1912, with the founding of "Achuza A - New York", a company that was involved in the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel, the purpose of which was to purchase land in Palestine, to immigrate to this country and to establish an agriculture settlement in Israel. The First World War put an end to the plan temporarily. Only in 1922, did the dream finally come true.

On the 2nd of April 1922, two wagons left Tel Aviv with 4 members of the original Ra'anana "Achuza" group, 3 workers and 2 armed guards. At the end of the 5 hour journey, they reached their destination, unloaded the wagon and decided that they would erect the first tent on that spot.

In its early days it was called "Raanania", a name suggested by its founders in the U.S. The settlement's Arab neighbors called it "Americaya", because most of it residents in those days spoke English and came from New York. Finally, the first settlers decided to select a Hebrew version of the name and it was called "Raanana".

Raanana's story is the story of the establishment of Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel, a story of Zionist fulfillment, a struggle for the country's independence and its establishment as the State of Israel. A story of a small settlement, which was comprised of 300 residents at the end of the War of Independence 1948, and today Raanana boasts approximately 70,000 residents.

Baruch Ostrovsky, the first mayor of Raanana (or Ra'anana), was the son of Diane and Shochat, born into a Hassidic family connected to the Rabbi of Telda. Baruch arrived in Israel in 1921, worked as teacher in Rehovot and Petach Tikva. A year later, moved to the USA, where he joined the "Poalei Zion" movement and served as head of the "Arbeiter Ring" schools network.

He was one of the founders of Raanana's Ahuza Alef New York Association, who intended to settle in the Land of Israel. In 1930, was sent as a representative of the orchard-growers of the Ahuza Alef - New York Association and lived with his family in Raanana (or Ra'anana). Chosen in 1931 as President of the settlement's Council, and with the declaration of Raanana as a Local Council in 1936, he was chosen as Council Head and was reelected a further time. He served as Council Head from 1936-1955 and again 1957-1959.

Served as Head of the settlement's Council and the Raanana (Ra'anana) Local Authority for 29 years, during which time the population grew, institutions were built and many roads paved.

Michael Paswigs, who was born in Vienna, Austria in 1916, studied in Vienna. He was member of the leadership of Gordonia and the Pioneer Center. Was involved with the youth and training organizations. On making Aliya in 1939, he founded a group of ex-Viennese immigrants, who joined the Avoka group in the Beit Shean valley.

In 1948, Paswigs moved to Raanana (Ra'anana), Israel and served as secretary of the local branch of the Workers Council. In 1954, he attended advanced courses in Economics in England and, in 1957, was appointed head of the overseas commercial unit in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. In 1961, served as deputy head of the Israeli delegation in Germany. From 1965, served as head of Yakhin and chairman of its board of directors.

While serving as secretary of the local branch of the Workers Council, Paswigs established the Histadrut building on the Raanana settlement. As Head of the Council, he was primarily involved with creating employment opportunities for the local population and new immigrants. Initiated the establishment of the first industrial factories on the settlement. Twice chosen as Head of the Raanana Council, between the years 1955-1957 and 1959-1960.

Yitzhak Skolnick, who was born in Russia in 1908, was member of a Zionist youth movement and was involved in the Zionist underground in the city of his birth. Made aliya in 1928, and worked in agriculture in Degania. Moved to Raanana at the end of 1928. Established a farm and was active on behalf of the working population in the settlement. In World War 2, enlisted in the British Army, serving for 6 years. In 1959, chosen as member of the Raanana Local Council and , after one year, was elected as its Head. He remained in this capacity, until he retired in November 1969. Continued as a member of the Raanana council, retiring from there in September 1971.

While serving as Head of the Raanana (Ra'anana) Council, the program to develop the Raanana (Ra'anana) settlement and absorb large numbers of residents was approved. Many industrial buildings were constructed and the foundations for the industrial area were laid. The neighborhood of Kiryat Sharett was also established for 1200 families, many of whom were new immigrants. During this period, regional institutions were established, Raanana's central water and sewage authorities were expanded, lighting was installed along Ahuza Street and the financial situation of the Council improved.

Benjamin Wolfovitch, who was born in Novogrodeck, White Russia in 1923, received a traditional education in Hadar, where he learned Hebrew. He continued his studies in Polish and Russian high schools. Wolfovitch was incarcerated in Nazi concentration camps during World War 2. In the winter of 1946, he came to Israel on the immigrant ship Moledet, that was captured close to the shores of Israel. Wolfovitch was deported to Cyprus and in January 1949, arrived in Israel to live in Hirbat Azon, where he was selected head of the village after a short time.

In early 1950, he began to work in the Workers' Association as secretary of the professional association. In 1963, he was elected secretary of the Workers's Union. In 1968, he was appointed as secretary of the Foreign Investors Association in the Agricultural Center. Wolfovitch served as Head of the Raanana City Council from 1969-1989.

During his tenure, the number of residents doubled and Raanana (Ra'anana) was declared a city and the Absorption Center, Sports Center in Kiryat Sharett, Yad Labanim, the Country Club, the Bowls and Squash Club and many educational buildings were constructed.

Benjamin Wolfovitch serves as Chair of the Association for Senior Citizens in Raanana and devotes his time and efforts for the elderly citizens of the city.

Today, 80 years later, Raanana (Ra'anana) is a thriving city in the heart of Israel's Sharon region, stretching over 14,928 dunams. A young and educated city, most of Raanana's residents are native Israelis living alongside many immigrants from all over the world, many of whom come from English speaking countries.

Raanana (Ra'anana) is proud of its many achievements in all areas of life, and is one of the most popular cities in Israel. The former mayor, Ze'ev Bielski, is now the head of the Jewish Agency for Israel. The current mayor, Nahum Hofree, was elected on August 2005.

Ra'anana (Raanana) that preserves its history, its village-like atmosphere and its attributes as a city of and for the residents, along with being characterized by the dynamic growth of the 21st century.

Raanana, Israel has seen marked growth in its development, the construction of new neighborhoods with sophisticated and modern community centers and public institutions, a thriving Hi-tech Park, but at the same time, the number of open public areas, parks and gardens for the enjoyment of its residents, children and youth has grown significantly.

Raanana, which has already won many awards for its activities, promoting environmental quality and quality of life, as well as the high level of its city infrastructure. Raanana (Ra'anana) continues to take scrupulous care of its environment and to invest in the improvement of its resident's quality of life, in the spirit of the international standard ISO-9002, which was awarded to the city on behalf of the Israeli Standards Institute.

Ra'anana's Child Welfare Department has recently been criticized for practicing gender bias discrimination against divorced fathers which has become the subject of many stories appearing in both the Israel and international media . According to Israel child psychologist Sara Silber, the child welfare department of Ra'anana has "not been responsive to citizens needs" and has been responsible for perpetuating archaic child custody laws (Knesset Child Custody Law of 1962). Silber has met with Ra'anana Mayor Hofree and provided a comprehensive plan for restructuring Ra'anana's Child Welfare Department. Both Ra'anana (Raanana) Mayor Hofree and the new head of Ra'anana's (Raanana's) child welfare department are examining the issue.

Other issues which have recently called for the attention of Ra'anana (Raanana) Mayor Hofree and the city council are water quality, the zoning out of tall rise commercial buildings and earthquake infrastructure preventive measures for Ra'anana (Raanana) many residential and commercial buildings.

Worst women's comics news for 2009: DC Comics cancelled Birds of Prey, the long-running and much-loved series about a superheroine team. Best news for early 2010: the Birds will be back later this year, to be written once more by the awesome Gail Simone. Below, some well-reviewed recent titles, a few interesting older titles, and a smattering of forthcoming ones for Women's History Month (March). Alcott is best remembered for Little Women, but she also wrote florid gothic tales. Somewhat sappy by modern tastes, her work gains verve through these lively, full-color renderings. In Trina Robbins's skillful adaptation of Little Women, pretty Jo March comes through as a modern gal ahead of her time. Of the gothics, the standout is "A Whisper in the Dark," in which a saucy young heiress plays father and son suitors against each other with a near-tragic outcome. With names like strippers—Pantha Stalk, Lorelei Rox—these vixens were more than a match for the Spirit, and although he could usually foil their schemes, only rarely could he arrest them. The event will continue today and Saturday with various guest speakers and screenings of "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man," "Sin City" and "Watchmen."

Patrick McLaughlin, English professor and organizer of the event, said graphic and novel adaptations have become a huge part of American culture.

"They are very important because embedded in all of these narratives are all sorts of ways to view the world, or the stories touch people at fundamental levels," he said.

"They know it resonates with them. The characterizations, the situations, the context. These characters have strengths and weaknesses and they can be seen in a 360-degree way and people can identify with them in some way or the other."

Following a screening of "The Dark Knight," which is the latest adaptation of "Batman," O'Neil; Peter Coogan, director of Comic Studies; Brooke Keesling, of New Deal Studios; and Marc Sumerak, a Cleveland-based writer talked about the importance and evolution of Batman throughout the past 71 years.

"One of the reasons Batman and Spider-Man are still so popular today is because they continue to evolve," O'Neil said.

McLaughlin said he was pleased to get O'Neil to share his wisdom on Batman and his comic book experiences.

"He is a living legend," he said.

"We are always trying to see what people are interested in, see what they are watching or what they are reading, and bring in a program that will address that."

He said those who come to the Comics Symposium get to meet people they may not get a chance to meet any other time.

"They get to meet some famous people that they otherwise wouldn't get a chance to meet and to hear behind-the-scenes dimensions. You can't get that anywhere else," McLaughlin said.

"Beyond that, they are meeting people who have similar interest and they can talk to them about what they've read and what they've seen."

'Ragtime's' superb music offsets graphic content - Florida Today

With today's opening of the musical "Ragtime," Cocoa Village Playhouse ventures into gritty and amazing territory, said director Anastacia Hawkins-Smith.

"The music starts and it doesn't stop," she said. "It's beautiful, amazing. The music is mesmerizing."

But, she said, with the racial slurs and acts of violence, the script also is graphic. She told the cast and parents of young cast members to read the script, then sign an agreement they would "perform it as written."

"It's a story of struggle," she said. "In order to bring the story to life and have full impact, we have to deliver it as it's written."

Based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow, the 1998 musical was written by librettist Terrence McNally with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Set in 1906, the story explores class and race in a changing America through the lives of three families: a white upper-class family, a black family and a Jewish immigrant family.

The Cocoa Village Playhouse production has a cast of 104 people. Hawkins-Smith said even with that whopping number, some performers take on five characters.

Although Batman himself wasn't present Thursday at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, his former boss was.

The legendary Dennis O'Neil, who is best known for being a group editor for the DC Comics "Batman" series in the 1980s, was one of the main guests Thursday during the school's 7th Annual Comics Symposium.

This year's event focuses on graphic and novel adaptations and students and members of the public screened "The Dark Knight" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

The event will continue today and Saturday with various guest speakers and screenings of "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man," "Sin City" and "Watchmen."

(news.com.au) - American computer graphic artists using cutting edge technology say they have recreated the face of Jesus based on the Shroud of Turin, news.com.au reported Wednesday citing The Christian Post .

It took a team from Studio MacBeth six months to create the image using the fabric many believe to be Jesus' burial cloth, as the blueprint, The Post reported.

"If you want to recreate the face of Jesus and you want to get the actual face of Jesus, you have only one object and that's the Shroud," said computer artist Ray Downing.

"It is the only object that can actually purport to be the actual image of Jesus with any kind of credibility whatsoever."

But the Shroud of Turin is not without controversy. Though many believe it is the cloth used to wrap the body of Jesus after his death, others assert that the shroud is from the medieval period and is not the precious relic that some claim.

The image will be revealed in a History Channel special airing in the U.S. tomorrow titled "The Real Face of Jesus?"

However viewers are warned the results may not resemble the more popular images of Jesus, American's ABC News reported.

Downing said an important factor in recreating the face was to consider that the shroud's cloth wrapped the body and the face.

Computer artists needed to take into account this distortion when recreating the face.

"By imitating those distortions we could take the image and put it back into that shape and figure out what the face looked like … it gave us a blueprint," he told The Christian Post.

AMERICAN computer graphic artists using cutting edge technology have recreated the face of Jesus based on the Shroud of Turin.

It took a team from Studio MacBeth six months to create the image using the fabric many believe to be Jesus' burial cloth, as the blueprint, The Christian Post reported.

Major Graphic Problems M1730 8800GTX - Toms Hardware

Hi all, pretty new here, I've been here many times before when googling certain computer problems that i could not solve, and have generally found them within the forum, but this time i have found a problem that no amount of googling will find, i cannot solve or figure this problem out.

I purchased a dell m1730 a few years ago with dual 8700's in, 6 months later the mobo broke, and dell replaced it and had to upgrade the graphics card due to a shortage, so i ended up with 8800gtx in sli, which was awesome, and since then i've never had a problem with this, it is a pretty good system, recently i have let a friend borrow it (who is a complete computer phobe), and he has done something really strange to this laptop, dell cannot figure it out all they can do is replace the graphics cards with dual 8400 for half a grand, and i dont fancy taking the (massive) reduction in performance for that type of money, so here is my problem.

recieved the laptop on windows xp (it had been on vista before), discovered that one graphics card was disabled in device manager, when enabling the card it caused a complete system crash, and the screen went a blank blue colour. after many fiddling around with settings, i could not sort it, so decided to re-install vista, which i was going to do anyway, vista installed fine, no problems, now when installing graphics drivers and rebooting the computer will simply not startup, it makes it too the desktop with mouse in the middle and will freeze within 3 seconds, loading up in safe mode works, so i checked the graphics cards out, nothing apparently wrong, so i disabled one, and rebooted, vista loads fine in a low resolution, going into device manager reveals that the card i disabled is disabled, but the other card is now code 43 (windows was informed there was a fault).

i have tried disabling the code 43 card, and enabling the disabled card, but all that happens on reboot is that the code 43 card is disabled, and the OTHER card is now code 43 instead, asif both cards are code 43, but i could use one card on xp and it played perfectly, even if i could get back to this setting i would be happy.

i have tried EVERY driver for the 8800m gtx, over a 100 drivers i have painstakingly re-installed, driver swept etc etc, even done a few different installs of vista, i have read MANY problems on code 43's on the net, and system crashs, i have tried different ram, less ram, more ram.

I am now completely stumped, any advice anybody could input would be greatly appreciated, i am now spending any more money on this laptop, it is a dead end to me, i simply am being gnawed by a problem i believe is solveable, i have seen 8800m gtx's for sale on ebay and things, so maybe buying one of them, so i dont know.

I am completely stumped, please help me before my girlfriend finds me in the corner of the room giggling to myself insanely. because that is going to happen if i dont find out what is wrong.

maybe the card is kaput, but it worked on xp, only one did anyway. i cant seem to get it to work on vista, if nothing can be done, has anybody got any insight on how to completely uninstall one graphics card without uninstalling the other? without disabling obviously, as disabling causes a code 43 wierdly :S.

Hello.

I have some old desktop here:

1.33ghz Amd Athlon, 1gb of memory and 1TB sata(via ata converter) disk.
Im quite happy with it

BUT I wish to play some "newer" games like: Morrowind, Olbivion, Quake 4, Doom 4 and GTA Vice City, San Andreas (games from 2001-2006 era mostly). I will be happy with 640x480 resolution with 20 FPS

What cheap (can be used) graphic card can you suggest for me for such old configuration on Amazon ? Im looking ofr something below 40$?

ps. Im not sure what kind of PSU i have in my computer, so please dont suggest any cards that requires a lot of energy.

Mindy McCready, who experienced a meteoric rise to fame on the country charts in the late 1990s with the #1 hit "Guys Do It All The Time," slid from music popularity to tabloid sensation in the following decade. Every summer our yard was overrun with grasshoppers. There were all types from the little green ones to the big Texas sized hoppers. I think my father called them Texas hoppers as an excuse to curse our neighboring state to the East, "Ain't that just like a bunch of damn Texans" was one of his favorite expressions.

On hot summer days my father would crank up the well pump and flood the front lawn and the fun would began. We would beg mom for a jar and head out to catch as many of the grasshoppers as we could. We would study them trapped in their glass enclosures, their big buggy eyes, spiny legs and how they looked like they are chewing tobacco. Eventually we would get board with our entomological study and then the horror would start.

We would take our jars full of grasshoppers and head to the side the pump house. Here my father kept a few chickens in a coop he had built. We would carefully unscrew the lids and then dump the hoppers out. The chickens would go nuts trying to catch as many as they could before the insects escaped through the wire. We would sit back and cheer the chickens on. It was a bloodbath for the grasshoppers, few ever made it out alive, little body parts were scattered everywhere.

Don't worry too much, there were always plenty of grasshoppers left in the wild. As for those who escaped our jars of death, well they probably got chewed up the next time dad mowed the lawn, such is the life of an insect. And in the long run none of my siblings grew up to be serial killers. What odd thrills we use to have in the days before violent video games.

I would like to deeply apologize for the insensitivity of this post. It was a poorly thought out comment, posted jest on my private facebook page. It was never intended to be viewed by anyone other than friends. This, of course, does not excuse the comment. This type of statement has no place in public or private discourse. It does not represent any true opinion, political or personal. My record in the New Hampshire House shows a commitment to equality and social justice. It is a record of which I am most proud. This comment is a disappointment not only to the people of New Hampshire, whom it has been my privilege to serve, but also to my own beliefs and moral code.

OK. As a Japanese, this comment was pretty harsh for me to hear.

Even though I've seen—unfortunately—and heard many ridiculous forms of anime that would make a normal person cringe, I'm curious to hear what lead to his outrage...Did his secretary find him clicking a link that his friend had sent him?

KING OF THE FLIES VOL. 1: HALLORAVE (Fantagraphics), written by Michel Prius and illustrated by Pascal (Mezzo) Mesenburg, is a dark tale that takes place in the subtitular town, where the suburban mundane is just a cover for the depravity, drug culture and sex that occurs daily. The story is told from the perspectives of many of the main characters, but the story mostly centers around Eric, who calls himself the King of the Flies (and wears a fly mask to make that point clear), and is not a wholesome citizen.

He's addicted to popping pills, supplied by either his friends Damian and Sally, his dealer Denis or his own mother. He has trouble maintaining a job. He lives with his mom and is totally dependent on her while attempting to maintain some sort of independence. And his sex life involves stealing his best friend's girlfriend or sleeping with an underage virgin. Eric seems to be the center of the Hallorave universe, as seen not only through his eyes, but those of the other characters as well.

KING OF THE FLIES is a very surreal and unsettling tale. Prius does a wonderful job creating a horror-driven universe that could really happen in real life, making readers second-guess the characters they invest 64 pages in. Who are these people? What are their goals? How are they all even related to each other in the larger picture? We don't get those answers until toward the end, but the ride there is always interesting. An ominous tone is maintained throughout, even during the funnier moments.

The narrative isn't scary in the "boo" sense; it's the way the characters behave that makes the story chilling. We have here people who dress like skeletons and attack random folks because it's considered fun, only to suffer the deadliest of consequences. Others use violence, sex and drugs to cope with grief. There's a moment where Eric and one girl have sex at a crime scene, and others where a young woman is "forced" to have sex with a much older man for money (she wonders if his penis is as spotted as the rest of his body), and is eventually videotaped during the act by Eric. Another character is an alcoholic and relies on an imaginary alter ego named Jimmy to do the dirty work for him. It's almost like something David Lynch would come up with. KING OF THE FLIES may not be a frightening tale, but it will make you somewhat uncomfortable.

Mezzo's illustrations are noirish in nature and quite nice to look at. They're dark, creepy and mature. The drawings enhance the text very well, and reading KING OF THE FLIES is like watching a film, but in book form. I could see this easily being turned into some sort of cult animated feature, if Prius and Mezzo were interested in doing so.

This volume is intended to be the first of a trilogy, although it's unclear if its characters will pop up in later installments (particularly Vol. 2, currently subtitled THE ORIGIN OF THE WORLD and set to debut in November). Either way, KING OF THE FLIES VOL. 1 left me wanting more, and left me very interested in reading this team's prior and future work. My only quibble: it was too short for me! This book isn't for young readers, with its foul language and sexually graphic illustrations and themes, or for the faint of heart, but it's definitely worth picking up if you enjoy dark tales of the human psyche.

Writer/artist talks “HOTWIRE” graphic novel - FANGORIA

Writer/artist Steve Pugh is already master of his four-color domain. Said domain includes etching adventures of popular characters who have inhabited the Marvel, DC and Dark Horse universes; in the process, Pugh has become a celebrated hero of the comic-book/graphic-novel medium, one whose more-often-than-not dark imagination knows no bounds.

Perhaps closest to his black-inked heart, however, is HOTWIRE: REQUIEM OF THE DEAD, the four-part miniseries he co-created with iconic comics scribe Warren Ellis. The series tells the tale of flamboyantly arch antiheroine Alice Hotwire, a misanthropic "detective exorcist" called in to track down and destroy a lethal, spectral strain of evil ghost dubbed the Blue Lights that are plaguing her city. Alice is the ultimate bad-girl action figure: post-punk haircut, impossibly tight clothes, gun locked, loaded and ready for action. She's like something out of an old HEAVY METAL pulp magazine and just as darkly, fantastically delicious.

Previously available as individual issues, the complete, outlandish supernatural adventure will be available next month in a 136-page, full-color "director's cut" trade paperback from Radical Comics, which will also include newly remastered adventures and fresh painted artwork. It's the ultimate love letter to the delectable but deadly femme fatale Ellis and Pugh created—though the latter is somewhat loath to label his leading lady as either a hero or a villain.

"For Alice, people are a mystery and an annoyance," Pugh says of the not terribly accommodating character. "She's written as being an outsider: sarcastic, overeducated, belittling to others. I think she'd hate having any real power, because she'd feel compelled to behave better. I tried to keep the entire story free of simple good-and-evil tropes, from being 'hate this guy' or 'love this guy.' "

REQUIEM FOR THE DEAD evokes a strange, frightening alternate world where the living and the dead openly share the same space. Ghosts flit freely about in dazed states, rarely infiltrating the natural world except by accident. Like George A. Romero's ghouls, the dead drift around based on foggy memories of what it means to be human, though as Pugh explains, the original concept wasn't so vague. "In the original HOTWIRE treatment, there was a very specific reason for the ghosts to be around," he reveals. "I felt it was a weak point in the story, a little contrived. Having regular ghosts attracted to the buzz of the cities seemed a much purer idea. They had to be interesting, sympathetic, not mad monsters; otherwise, why would they be tolerated? I like the tension they generate—the kind of deep, gut-burning guilt that the homeless and the mentally ill can evoke in us—but also the underlying fear that they'll all someday realize that they got the crappy end of the stick and turn ugly."

And of course, turn ugly is exactly what they do, hence the involvement of comely, no-nonsense ghostbuster Alice. Initially, her role is to meander through the city streets, keeping the peace between man and phantom, a role that turns on a dime when the specters start gunning for blood. Think CSI meets CAPTAIN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER, and you get a vague sense of the arch world on display, the blend of Gothic classic and urban contemporary that Ellis and Pugh sought to create.

The original version of HOTWIRE was penned by Ellis in the early 1990s, and as Pugh explains, it was with great trepidation and humility that he approached rewriting the notoriously controlling writer's material, including the task of radically redesigning the character of Alice herself. "An old pro doesn't need his stuff coming back to bite him," Pugh laughs. "But there was always something about HOTWIRE's central concept that had me hooked. I basically pestered the poor sod until he let me work up a 'reimagining' of the original. Warren's not the autocrat that he loves to paint himself as, but only because he's already got everything pinned down, thought out and damn near perfect already."

Sacco's stories unravel like travelogues as he depicts himself traversing bombed-out neighborhoods in search of interviews. He has a lot to say about the news-gathering process and the complexities of objectivity. While he's sympathetic to the Palestinians, he is quick to point out hypocrisy. "Palestinians kill civilians too," he writes, "and with a human weapon more accurate than the laser-guided bombs of the Israelis."

Sacco is obsessed with detail, sometimes to a fault. The half-century of Israeli-Palestinian conflict he pours into "Footnotes in Gaza" is a complicated cauldron of battles, betrayal and political posturing. At times, this can bring the narrative to a simmer, but it's always shocked awake by bloody violence. Sacco is an expert at the minutiae of brutality (he shows every clubbing, every gun wound). For the reader, this can be a tough read.

But there is also great beauty in the book's black-and-white vision. Faces seem to pop off the page -- a result of Sacco's hyper-detailed line work and his knack for embellishing key physical features, such as bushy mustaches and sunken eyes. In Sacco's hands, even the word balloons contain a visual dynamism. These boxes of type tilt and shift on the page, as if they've become unhinged by the constant Israeli shelling (Sacco is shot at several times). "Footnotes in Gaza" showcases a master at the peak of his powers. All he asks is that we pay attention.

My current problem is that I am doing design work with large files and my PC can't handle processing my requests.

I would like to get:

RAM

I am interested in longevity. Would like to be able to take advantage of USB 3.0 (if this can be solved by buying a PCI card at a later time, that is fine) in the future. Would be nice to get a board that will be compatible with the next generation of stuff that is coming up.

If you ever doubted that our friends at iFixit were the kings of the nerdy tear-down, you can stop it right now. With one simple (and rather big) info-graphic, Kyle Wiens and his minions have managed to detail almost every difference between the flagging Nexus One Googlephone and Apple's iPhone 3GS. And despite a huge defeat in the first month's sales (almost three million versus almost 100,000), the Nexus wins in just about every category.

In fact, if the cellphone market were instead a game of Top Trumps, Google would be killing it. From its bigger, higher resolution screen through its processor and the RAM available to it to its easy-to-replace battery (two steps vs. the iPhone's whopping 16 steps), it has the iPhone beat. Why, then, is nobody buying them?

We'd say software. From one end, the iPhone has roughly a zillion apps available, against the tens of thousands in the Android marketplace. And from the other end, it seems that the real, normal cellphone buyer could care less about multitasking, preferring something that is just easy to use.

We have seen this before, remember, in the MP3-player market. Everyone tried to compete with added features, from FM radios to voice recording, but people kept buying the iPod because it was easy, it worked with iTunes and it was what all their friends had. If Google or anyone else is going to beat the iPhone, it had better come up with something that isn't just an old desktop style OS made for the small screen.

Everything "Twilight" touches turns to gold -- and a new graphic novel based on the book can now boast the largest debut for a graphic novel in the U.S. ever!

According to the publisher, "Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 1" sold over 66,000 copies in its first week.

The book already broke another record for largest first printing of a graphic novel, with 350,000 copies.

The release date for Volume 2 hasn't been announced yet -- but with numbers like these, we're guessing they're working as quickly as possible to get it out there.

WASHINGTON – After long and trying negotiations, the U.S. and Russia have reached agreements for a historic new treaty to reduce the nuclear arsenals of former Cold War rivals, officials said Wednesday. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are to sign the pact in two weeks in Prague.

The deal is seen as an important step toward rolling back global nuclear dangers and sealing an increased level of trust and cooperation between the U.S. and Russia, who possess the vast majority of the world's nuclear arms and have labored under strained relations in recent years.

Obama and Medvedev are expected to seal the deal when they talk by telephone this week, setting the stage for a White House campaign to win Senate ratification. The treaty also must win approval by the Russian Duma, and the two legislative processes are likely to take months.

Robert S. Norris, a longtime analyst of U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals, said Senate ratification would not be easy.

"Hard negotiations with the Russians will now be followed by hard negotiations with Republican senators to achieve ratification," Norris said.

Though the State Department said the two countries were still working out unspecified final technical details, spokesman Mark Toner said there had been discussions with the Czech government about holding a signing ceremony in Prague — where Obama last April declared his vision of a nuclear-free world.

In fact, Czech officials went ahead and announced that Prague would host the signing.

They did not give a date, but Russian and U.S. officials said it was expected to be April 8.

The new agreement to reduce long-range nuclear weapons would replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which expired in December. An important feature of the new deal is that it includes a mechanism for verifying that each side complies — an element that was absent from a 2002 deal, known as the Moscow Treaty, that accelerated the weapons reductions laid out in the 1991 treaty.

The Moscow Treaty set limits on both sides' strategic nuclear warheads at between 1,700 and 2,200. The new deal, whose provisions have not been made public, is expected to lower that to about 1,500. It also would reduce the permissible number of strategic launchers — the missiles and bombs that deliver warheads to their targets.

Obama spent an hour Wednesday in the White House briefing Democratic Sen. John Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. Richard Lugar, the committee's ranking Republican. Both would play major roles in ratification of the emerging treaty.

Kerry said he and Lugar would hold hearings to examine details.

"A well-designed treaty will send an important message to the rest of the world that America is prepared to lead efforts with key stakeholders to reduce the threat of nuclear weapons," he said.

Maria Lipman, an expert with the Moscow Carnegie Center think tank, said this week the new treaty could not only reduce the size of both country's nuclear arsenals but also change the psychology of the U.S.-Russia relationship, which has been strained for at least the past six years.

"Gradually the attitude may change to where America is not seen from Russia as a force to be treated with suspicion," she said.

Richard Burt, a former U.S. ambassador and chief U.S. negotiator of the original START agreement, described the about-to-be-announced follow-on treaty as the first significant arms reduction agreement in nearly two decades. He said it advances momentum toward eliminating nuclear weapons.

"This agreement will set the stage for further cuts in U.S. and Russian arsenals and multilateral negotiations for reductions by all nuclear weapons countries," Burt said.

Two senior U.S. officials in Washington said the technical issues still to be resolved were in an "annex" to the main treaty, and they foresaw no hurdles to completing the entire deal within days. They spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive discussions. One official said an announcement that the treaty is complete is expected by Friday.

A Kremlin source, speaking by telephone to The Associated Press, said all the documents, including the treaty, had been agreed upon. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last week that the treaty was 20 pages long, with an extensive protocol attached.

Negotiations, which have been under way in Geneva since last spring, became bogged down in recent months on disputes over verification measures and Russia's objection to U.S. missile defense plans for Europe.

Russian negotiators have balked at including some intrusive weapons verification measures in the new treaty. The Obama administration has warned that without these, Senate ratification could prove difficult.

The agreement would still leave each country with a large number of nuclear weapons, both deployed and stockpiled. Norris, the nuclear weapons expert, estimates that the U.S. has 2,150 deployed strategic nuclear weapons and the Russians have about 2,600.

The expired START treaty, signed by Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and President George H.W. Bush, required each country to cut its nuclear warheads by at least one-fourth, to about 6,000, and to implement procedures for verifying that each side was sticking to the agreement. The 2002 Moscow Treaty lowered the warhead limit to 1,700 to 2,200.

Graphic novelist Lynda Barry will present the 2010 Foundation Lecture at 10:30 a.m. March 23 at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.

Barry will discuss her book, "What It Is," which is based on "Writing the Unthinkable," her tried-and-true creative method that is playful, powerful and accessible to anyone with an inquisitive wish to write or remember. She explores the depths of the inner and outer realms of creation and imagination, where play can be serious, monsters have purpose and not knowing is an answer unto itself.

She has worked as a painter, cartoonist, writer, illustrator, playwright, editor, commentator and teacher (and claims to have found them all more or less all alike).

Barry is well known for her syndicated strip "Ernie Pook's Comeek," featuring Marlys and Freddy, as well as her books "One! Hundred! Demons!," "The! Greatest! of! Marlys!," "Cruddy: An Illustrated Novel," "Naked Ladies! "Naked Ladies! "Naked Ladies!" and "The Good Times are Killing Me." She also edited the 2008 edition of "The Best American Comics."

Born in Wisconsin in 1956, Barry studied at Evergreen State College, where she became good friends with "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening. Her work has been widely praised and one of her books, "The Good Times are Killing Me" — also adapted as an off-Broadway musical — won the Washington State Governor's Award.

So now we have confirmation from Senator Bart Stup-id-ass-ak, (Stupak-D-Mi) that the president has agreed to sign an executive order, basically saying that...well, basically saying that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING will change or will have changed before the bill as after the bill, and that current law will be the law of the land, where abortion law is concerned.

So Mr Stupid-ass-ak, the esteemed colleague from Michigan gets....NOTHING...and the pro-choice and other Dems, including the president lose NOTHING...

So we've basically been held hostage by a group of asshats over something that looked like something at one end (Stupak's demands), but turned out to look like something else at the other end (the compromise), but, coming out the end, it's all basically the same stuff...

Google is calling all aspiring graphic artists and graphic illustrators to submit a home page logo for Google! Imagine that! But you have to be a kid; chronologically a kid.

What Google wants you to to is to create a Google logo based on the theme "If I could do anything I would..."

Invent a pill that would make everyone healthy?
Build and drive race cars?
Become a veterinarian?

Yes, the possibilities are endless. Think of that one thing you would do if you could and then create a way to express that in a Google logo.

Last year's winner was Christin Engelberth, a sixth-grader at Bernard Harris Middle School in San Antonio, Texas. The theme of the contest last year was "What I Wish For The World," and Ms. Engleberth's wish was "A New Beginning." Here is her winning logo....

The Google competition is open to U.S. schools, grades K -12. Many great prizes will be awarded in categories by grade. There will be State, Regional, and National Finalists before the winner is chosen. The winner will receive a $15,000 college scholarship "to be used at the school of his/her choice, a trip to the Google New York office for an event on May 26, 2010, a laptop computer, a Wacom digital design tablet, and a t-shirt printed with his/her doodle on it. We'll also award the winner's school a $25,000 technology grant towards the establishment/improvement of a computer lab."

Students must submit their Doodles through their schools, which must register before March 17, 2010. Last 10 months i have lot's of problems whit my pc the games just Freezes (the game whit higher graphic issues like Call of Duty MW2 or BT: Bad Company 2), here are my specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66
Asus Maximus II Formula
Gainward GTX 295
8 GB RAM (Corsair) - XMS2
PSU: TX750W Corsair
1 Hard: WD

Well first i had Radeon 4870 X2 but the graphic card after Two months was broken so the store replace it whit GTX295. Now the same problems, sometimes when i start computer it doesn't recognize graphic card. The Forceware is 196.21, the Bios of the motherboard is the latest 2202.
The Expert tool shows temperature of GPU at desktop 54 C. Sometime i set fans to 80 % and the game freezes
What could it be PSU or Motherboard or graphic card?
3DMark passes whiteout any problems
Please tell me what to do?

From Gautam Bhatia comes graphic novel, miniature style - New Kerala

By Madhusree Chatterjee, New Delhi, March 21: Filled with rich visual imagery in miniature art style, Bihar is a tale of rise, fall and redemption in architect-writer Gautam Bhatia's new graphic novel, "Lie: A Traditional Tale of Modern India".

"If good politics is about governance, how can a minister inaugurate a speedbreaker when people do not have enough food? Or a conference on drought degenerate into a debate over wines among the delegates?" Bhatia told IANS in an informal chat, explaining the context of the book.

"We live a pack of lies in our daily lives," said the self-depreciating architect, who is "now busy designing two ugly buildings in the capital".

Bhatia conceived the illustrations, which have been executed by miniaturists Shankar Lal Bhopa, Birju Lal and Ghansham, modelled on 17th and 18th century Rajasthani miniature paintings.

"I wanted the figures on a flat two-dimensional plane where everyone looked very strong and bold. It is part of the Indian miniature tradition. I had to learn to work with the style in which the colours appeared shorter. It was difficult," Bhatia said.

He is known for his funny and satirical stories woven around architecture. His latest book developed from a graphic art project on contemporary Indian social realities, Desh Ki Awaaz, supported by the Ford Foundation, two years ago.

"I collaborated with with graphic novelist Orijit Sen for the project, which we exhibited last year. Later, I decided to carry it forward as a pictorial novel."

The architect is the author of a trilogy - "Punjabi Baroque", "Silent Dreams" and "Malaria Spaces" - which probe the cultural and social aspects of architecture. His last book, "Whitewash: The Tabloid That Is, About The India That Isn't", was published in 2007.

The stylised drawings in "Lie" are executed in the traditional water tempera technique and the text is richly textured with references to colonial architecture like the Patna Gymkhana Club and the average Bihari home whose essence is "a cluster of small dark rooms" and an "elaborate Gothic facade".

The story is an irreverent, ironic and a seemingly prophetic take on a fictional India scenario where Bihar - often dubbed as the microcosm of the India's socio-political underbelly, with its corruption, ambivalence and double-edged social justice - comes across as a "karmabhoomi" brimming with look-alikes of Jayaprakash Narayan and Lalu Prasad, who appear in post-modern eccentric avatars.

The book begins with two parallel events: the collapse of villager Ali Baba's family in a fateful fire in Bihar and the lavish wedding of a Patna-based smuggler-turned freedom fighter Sati Mishra's son Rocky in Taj Mahal.

The text is funny and the illustrations are simple in a rather 17th century style.

Rocky, the smuggler, becomes politician Bhola post-wedding and subsequently a minister after a rigged electoral sweep. Rekha Pande, the winner of a popular national television reality show, becomes prime minister and clamps emergency on the country. She tries to gag freedom activist Ali Baba who gathers a loyal band of followers in the capital with his "message of compassion and individual freedom".

Bhola is made the country's health and family planning minister while his long-suffering wife has to live with her mother-in-law, who consigns her granddaughters to the waste bin. Rekha who once plied the world's oldest profession, sex trade, before her ascent to power, introduces a five-point programme to improve the lives of women. She also promotes austerity, tradition and nationalism.

The "Indian cricket team is executed for losing to Pakistan and newspaper editors are denied air-conditioners for failing to comply with the PM's press commandment".

Bhola follows Rekha in all her mad plans till he meets the fasting Ali Baba at the India Gate. "He recognises Ali Baba from his early life. And begins the long walk home," said Bhatia.

Before returning to his roots in Bihar, Bhola guns down Rekha in a symbolic gesture of redemption during their morning stroll at the India Gate.

The book, which is yet to be launched, has been published by Tranquebar Press.

"The book had been there in my head for a long time. But it took a long time to explain to the artists the difference between the visual impact of a book and a framed work of graphic and graffiti art.

"As I was working outside the self-protective bounds of conventional art, the book was often marked by conflicts of opinion between the village artist, the graphic designer and the trained architect. And the result was kind of funny and sad," Bhatia said.

The exhibition, "Desh Ki Awaz", will be on view at the Alliance Francaise on March 27.
